We are delighted to welcome back Jane Merfield for her solo exhibition, Marking Time. Following her exhibition, Time Travel in 2024, we are thrilled to present this new body of work, which continues her exploration of memory, place, and the way painting can hold a moment in suspension. These works invite us to pause, reflect, and inhabit the quiet space between experience and recollection.

Jane’s paintings emerge from years spent observing and absorbing landscapes shaped by water, light, and distance. Drawn repeatedly to the coastlines of southern Greece and Scandinavia, and the harsh, wild interior landscape of Mani, in mainland Greece, Jane translates lived experiences into works that hover between observation and memory.

“I seem to have spent an inordinate amount of time over the years gazing out over various bodies of water, particularly in southern Greece and Scandinavia.”

Each painting is rooted in real experiences with place: hiking through craggy mountains softened by spring flowers, navigating the route home, whilst feeling lost, through the stark, lunar terrain of inner Mani, or looking out across an expanse of water. Yet these works are not documented records. Instead, they are distilled impressions, shaped by time and reflection, where landscape becomes a vessel for mood, memory, and imagination.

At the heart of Marking Time is a sense of stillness. Jane’s paintings evoke moments of quiet contemplation, inviting viewers to linger within landscapes that feel both familiar and dreamlike. Her work captures the elusive sensation of being suspended in time, a fleeting moment preserved and transformed through paint.

“Mostly they are about stillness and a certain sort of reverie.”
